By Joe Vitale:
Georgia senior outside linebackers Davin Bellamy and Lorenzo Carter were included on the 2017 Butkus Award watchlist. The award, named after the Illinois and Chicago Bear great, is given annually to college football’s top linebacker.
Last season, Bellamy recorded 51 total tackles, 5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for a loss. Carter had 44 total tackles, 5 sacks and 6 tackles for a loss.
Carter and Bellamy, along with 2016’s leading tackler Roquan Smith, lead a deep and talented front seven for the Bulldogs.
Both linebackers considered applying early for the NFL Draft but announced they would return to Athens for their senior years last December.
Dan Matthews of GridironNow had this to add about the absence of Roquan Smith: “The most surprising omission from the SEC is Georgia’s Roquan Smith, who led the Bulldogs in tackles last season and was a first-team preseason All-SEC selection.”
