This week, Forbes magazine released a list of the top 25 colleges that excel in both academics and in sports.
The University of Georgia placed No. 17 on the list. Stanford, UCLA and Southern Cal led the list. Florida was the highest SEC-rated school at No. 12 with LSU the only other SEC representative (No. 20) on the list.
The metric used to determine which schools historically “dominate” athletically was based on total Division I Team NCAA championships and football national championships. For a school to qualify, they must fall in the top 1% of the all-time total number of NCAA championships – which according to NCAA records, there have been 1,949 total national titles won (NCAA and football), meaning a minimum of 20 championships were required to be considered for this list.
Rankings also factored in schools’ academic records based on the Forbes list of Americas’ Top Colleges.
“We are pleased that Forbes magazine has ranked the University of Georgia among the nation’s top 20 public and private universities for our academic and athletic excellence — on par with such institutions as Michigan, UNC, Yale, Princeton and Notre Dame,” stated Greg Trevor, Georgia’s executive director of media communications in a press release.
